I grew up watching American TV because I live in America. To Americans, TV gets boring after a certain point. It always the same shows just told in a different way or the same concept. You can always predict what is going to happen. I would always founding myself watching one show and then getting bored of it so easily and founding a new one. I never could sit there and just finish an American show. I just so happen to stumble upon kdrama because of anime. I was a huge fan and most kdrama are based off of an anime. I just so happen to be looking for an anime to watch on Netflix. When I saw the kdrama Boys over Flowers and I had seen the anime. I took the chance and watched. I fell in love with it and before I knew it, I could not stop watching kdramas. They just became an addiction.
Over the years kdrama has started to get bigger around the world. It has especially gotten bigger in America. To the point that America has now decide to make their own remake of kdrama shows. Such as Good Doctor, Nine, Answer Me 1994 and Man From Another Star. If you are Viki fan then you know they did a remake already on Boys over Flowers. As you can see kdrama is getting bigger and bigger.
In the article “Is America Ready for Korean Dramas" Written by Tae Hong. He give two important facts about sites that are mostly kdrama based like Dramafever. "According to DramaFever Co-founder Suk Park, 80 percent of its 18 million subscribers are non-Asian — 40 percent white, 26 percent Hispanic and only 15 percent Asian." Yes, people kdrama is actually a thing and not something that just blew up out of nowhere. The second fact is "Romantic comedies are the bread and butter of Korean dramas, especially compared to less popular action- and thriller-genre series, which American TV excels in, he said." Therefore, drawing the line between Kdramas and American dramas.
American dramas are more action and thriller based. Yes, America does have romance and comedy. To many of the people who turn to kdramas; America does not do such a great job with those two sections. Which is why American entertainment companies is hoping by remaking some kdramas they can get back most of the viewers who do not really watch American TV any more.
It seems as these entertainment companies are finally realizing why people got to kdramas. American dramas are a whole lot of sex and violence. I am not saying kdramas do not have that at all either. Kdramas do not really show sex, you would maybe only found two or three shows like that. Their shows do have violence but not nearly as much violence as American TV shows. Both American show and Kdrama show are totally cheesy but they both show it differently. When people see an American TV show that is cheesy they immediately cut it off. When people watch a kdrama that is cheesy, they keep watching. This tells you there is a difference.
Things might not go how American TV stations want it. Many kdrama lovers are not looking forward to the kdrama remake. They believe the TV station will mess up the show just like they have done for many of their shows. They wish for America to keep their hands off of kdrama. No wants a bad kdrama like Boy over Flowers again. Now it is up to you to decide. Is kdramas or American dramas better? Do you want to see an American Remake on kdramas?
